"Youth is our future", this is the creed of Heinrich and Ortrud Dammann, "it is important to nurture and support it, hence our foundation".
Heinrich and Ortrud Dammann, born on March 5, 1924, and passed away on December 20, 2014, respectively, hailed from the small chalk village of Söhlde, situated on the eastern edge of the Hildesheim district. Despite not having children of their own, this dedicated couple established the Heinrich Dammann Foundation in 1991, aimed at providing support to both Christian and secular youth initiatives. Over the years, they made additional contributions, and Heinrich Dammann ultimately bequeathed his assets to the foundation.
Heinrich Dammann, a seasoned politician from the very beginning, embarked on his political journey in 1946 by becoming a member of the newly founded CDU at the time. Just two years later, at the age of almost 24, he assumed leadership of the local administration in Söhld. From 1952 to 1960, he served as a member of the district executive committee of the Lower Saxony Land Municipal Association. In recognition of his remarkable contributions, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on March 18, 1980.
Furthermore, the name Heinrich Dammann has been closely associated with the economic exploitation of chalk as a raw material for half a century.
In May 1955, the entrepreneur and philanthropist laid the foundation for a company that is now known as "Vereinigte Kreidewerke Dammann GmbH & Co. KG," encompassing the three German chalk regions in Lower Saxony (Söhlde), Schleswig-Holstein (Lägerdorf), and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Klementelvitz on Rügen).
Heinrich Dammann passed away on March 27, 2013, at the Hildesheim Clinic at the age of 88. Just as he had wished: without life-prolonging technology. He wanted to be allowed to die. The following day, State Superintendent Eckhard Gorka performed the last rite together with his wife Ortrud Dammann. Then he was transferred to Söhlde, his birthplace.
The burial took place on April 6, 2013. A large number of mourners bid farewell to Heinrich Dammann in a dignified ceremony with trombone choir and hunting horns. Radiant sunshine bathed everything in a serious lightness, connected with the wish for a safe journey for his soul.
